I have purchased a disc of Aperture 3.xx upgrade. My original Aperture is 1.5.6
I think that it was factory loaded but in any case I can't find the serial number which the upgrade requires. Is there a way to find the S/N in my applications folders for the 1.5.6 (I still have it but obviously it won't work with Snow Leopard?

If you can launch the application, you can read the serial # off the launch dialog. I don't know of another way to get the info by 'reverse engineering' or reading a file, unless it is in /Library/ProApps/Aperture System ID in a readable format (it's not with Aperture 3.x, and I don't have Aperture 1.5 on hand any more to verify).
If it's not, you're in a bind.

    I was having the same problem, unable to find my trash can. I did everythnig suggested in this post to no avail. Then I discovered if you hover to the far right of RECENT you will see either 'Show' or 'Hide' 'Show' reveals the following, including the trash. I'm sheepish that the solution was so easy but delighted to report that after viewing AND emptying my trash, I gained 55 GB on my HD.

  • After upgrading to OS X 10.8, when I try to install Aperture, I keep getting this error message 'To open Aperture, Installer must quit and reopen'. I have the box version of Aperture 3, so it's version 3.0 and I will not be able to download the latest dmg off Mac App Store. Any suggestion will be appreciated.

  • Help! I just upgraded my early 2008 MacBook Pro 4,1 from OS X 10.5.8 to 10.6.7. Everything appears to be working fine, except for Aperture 3.1.2, which won't launch - gives an error message which states that 'there is a problem' and to 'check with the developer to make sure Aperture works with this version of Mac OS X' ( I have to admit I got a chuckle at that, since it's Apple's own effing product!). Any suggestions short of reinstalling Aperture?

    And while the web page mentions 10.6.4 it still holds for 10.6.7

  • I upgraded the OS on my 2007 iMAC7,1 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz to Snow Leopard a couple of months ago. Afterwards, when I tried to start Aperture, I got a message that my version of Aperture (1.5.6) was not supported under the new OS.
    So today, I went to the Apple store and bought an upgrade to Aperture 2. The upgrade version is 2.1.1. I installed this and when I start Aperture, the app appears to start, the 'intro' white screen comes up with the version / serial number, etc, and then the Welcome Screen starts up.
    No matter what I choose from the Welcome Screen (Usually I pick Start Using Aperture), the SW appears to be stuck. The welcome screen disappears as expected, and the command bar across the top of the screen appears, but that's it - the normal aperture screen that shows your projects, etc. never comes up. Most of the commands in the sub-menus on the command bar are grayed out.
    To make matters worse, when I try to quit, nothing happens. No message, no nothing, it just sits there. I have to do the Option-Cmd-Esc sequence and kill Aperture.
    I checked for SW update and updated everything that was available (OS and Aperture to 2.1.4), rebooted, etc. However, there was no change in behavior.
    Everything else on this machine works fine, no other issues or even behavior changes in my machine. The only problem is with Aperture.
    To summarize: Aperture 1.5.6 quit working after I installed Snow Leopard. I bought the Aperture upgrade and installed, which allows me to start Aperture but doesn't let me do anything further.
    Has anyone else seen an issue like this? Any suggestions for what may be wrong?

    You may want to try rebuilding the library or doing a consistency check. Hold command-option when you launch Aperture and choose the relevant options.
    Note that Aperture 2.x will have to upgrade the library from 1.x to run. You should get a dialog box to kick this off (and it does take some time), but it sounds like you haven't even gotten that far.
    You do need to be running Aperture 2.1.4 on Snow Leopard, but from your description it sounds like you're already on that version.

  • I have Aperture 2 with upgrade to 3 (boxed versions). I bought a new MacBook Pro and now I am unable to install the Aperture application. When I install aperture 2, only sample projects are installed. No installation options are offered. There is no Aperture.app in the /Applications directory. When I then try to install upgrade to 3, it somehow recognizes that I already have Aperture 2 (I do not know where), and tries to upgrade. Then I finally have app in /Applications, but it is incomplete, unable to load - does not even launch, just writes that it is missing MainMenu.nib into the console.
    What is wrong?

    Once you have done an installation it is always good practive to run Disk Utility/ Repair Permission on your system disk, this can help resolve some issues.
    Then if this does not work try following the steps listed on the Trouble Shooting Basics page.

    Is the upgrade Academic also? You can't upgrade an Academic version to a regular version.

I cant remember how I got to Aperture 3, I think it was via a web download but not sure. I have checked my purchases in the App Store but there is no indication of me buying an upgrade to Aperture 3.

    Then you can download the Trial version of Aperture 3 and unlock it with your serial numbers - you will need all three for all three versions: A current link to the Trial version is in this support document, also instructions on how to reinstall on different systems:

    BTW: Your Aperture 3 serial number will be displayed in the 'About' panel - the panel you see, when you use the command 'About Aperture' from the Aperture menu in the main menu bar.

  • I have an iPhoto library with only Jpeg's in it. I just installed Aperture 3.5 and imported several RAW photos in Aperture. Shouldn't I now have an Aperture library?

    Should I create an Aperture library and import all of my photos from iPhoto to the new Aperture library? Then delete my iPhoto library entirely? Just trying to get my library structure correct from the get-go as I plan to shoot only in RAW.
    That is not an easy question. There are still a few glitches with the unified library approach. For example, the new iWork applications will not yet show the Aperture library in the Media Browser, only the current iPhoto library. If you are using iWork with your photolibrary, keep it an iPhoto library.
    And it is unclear, what will happen, when Aperture or iPhoto will be upgraded to newer versions. Right now you need the latest iPhoto version to be able to upgrade older iPhoto libraries, if you want to open them in Aperture. So probably you will need to upgrade iPhoto as well, if you keep your library an iPhoto library, when both Aperture and iPhoto will be upgraded to Aperture 4 and iPhoto 12.0 or similar. In the long run it will be safer to convert the library to an Aperture library, if you do not want to keep updating iPhoto, but that can wait.
    If you want to convert the iPhoto library to an Aperture library, back up your iPhoto library.
    Then create a new Aperture library (with File > Switch to Library > Other/New ) and then import your iPhoto library into Aperture using the command 'File > Import > Library' and select your iPhoto library.
    You will need plenty of space on the drive with the new library. Merging a library into another one will temporarily a lot of working space and may take a long time - several hours for a large library, without visible progress.

  • Hi I tried to upgrade Aperture 3.3.2 after instaling Mountain Lion and the progress bar stops at approx 96% and will not complete. Anyone have any proven fixes for this issue? It is preventing other update installs until the Aperture upgrade is completed.

    Did iPhoto come preinstalled on your Mac? Then you need to upgrade it from the AppStore, not from the Update menu.

  • Has anyone tried to install Aperture on an older PowerMac G5 or PowerMac G4 that **has been upgraded** to a compliant graphics card? If anyone has had success in this regard and has done so on a PowerMac G4, could you also indicate whether or not you're using a processor upgrade?
    I know the compatibility checker indicates such installations won't work, but it's important someone actually tries it for real -- maybe someone who has Aperture on a supported machine but also an unsupported one sitting around.

    How do you know? And, if you don't own or have access to unsupported hardware or know of a case where someone has failed or succeeded in installing the actual application on unsupported hardware, I have to wonder why you submitted this 'answer'; it's not helpful.
    Since I made the original post I found, thanks to MacSurfer, a blog in which the author of the blog reported he had succeeded in installing the application on a PowerMac G4 that did not have Core Image support -- a 2003 G4 with '1.4GHz dual processors' (so I assume the 1.42GHz dual Firewire 800 model), and a boring old Radeon 9000 video card. The only requirements he officially met were the 1GB of RAM and 5GB of hard drive space. If this is a) true and b) typical, it means that not only is the application not blocked against certain processors or systems (not too surprising), it is also not blocked against non-Core Image graphics cards (a huge surprise to me).

    I'd like to know if this is strictly an accident (or a hack) or if it is indeed widespread. As someone with a 1.2GHz G4 who is considering putting in a 256MB VRAM Radeon 9600, chances are I could run this application quite comfortably if this report is accurate and did not involve a hack.

    Aperture is pretty much self contained. Just install it (or, if you prefer, delete Aperture 1.5 from your /Applications folder and then install Aperture 2).

    If you have valid serial numbers you can download the Aperture 3.1 Trial DMG. After downloading the DMG file, double-click it to mount it. Then run the Aperture 3.1 trial installer. Once installed, run SW update to update it to the latest version (currently 3.4.1). Or download the latest Aperture updater from Apple's Download Page. Look through the list for the Aperture 3.4.1 updater (or later updater depending on when you are reading this).
    After you've updated it, run Aperture and enter the valid serial number to activate it.
    If your Aperture 3 serial number is an upgrade serial number rather than a full version serial number, you'll also be asked to enter your version 2 serial number. Pay attention to which serial number you are being asked for.
